For any given year, total assets and total debts had to be equal. For example, the summary pages at the end of this section show the assets and debts of the community for the year 1761-1762 at £23,231-17-7. In order to make these numbers come out even, it was necessary compute the difference between total assets and total debts—giving the net financial position of the community. In this case, the "Ballance in favor of the General Diaconat at Bethlehem," amended by the note below shows that on May 31, 1762, Bethlehem was £211-18-11 in the black. Page 22 notes that at the time of this summary, they had £253-13-3 in cash on hand.
