Ledgers/Extracts - Tutorial

Return to Ledgers

This third section shows the Diacony's cash flow during the year in question. An examination of this section shows us that between June 1, 1761 and May 31, 1762, the total cash flow amounted to 7,260-7-7 paid out, and 2,352-7-8 — less than that taken in. In other words, the Diacony spent almost £2,400 more than it earned. Taking this section and the first section together, we can see that the Bethlehem Diacony lost money during the 1761-1762 fiscal year, but in the context of the remainder of the financial extract, remained financially stable. Like the first section of the extract, this final section is arranged as two running columns. The left hand side (pages 25 & 27) shows cash received by the Diacony during the year, the right side shows cash paid out. The Diacony received money for selling farm products, and in the form of various gifts received. They spent money on a variety of food and merchandise, as well as books, newspapers, voyages.
