Bethlehem Diary, Volume II

Sunday, April 19
Br. Boehler delivered the regular sermon on the usual Gospel passage concerning the Good Shepherd, with special effect and blessing among the strangers.  A considerable number of them were present.  Pyrlaeus conducted the English service on the text for the day.  In the afternoon he also preached on the Epistle, particularly on the words, He has sacrificed Himself for our sins in His body on the tree, so that we have died to sins and live to righteousness, etc.  A feeling of grace moved powerfully among the souls, and one felt that the blood of the wounds was present.  The quarter-of-an-hour services were held in due order, and in the Married People’s quarter-of-an-hour service Sr. Pyrlaeus brought her daughter to the congregation.  Following the hymn, Oh, what a foundation of grace, etc.  Br. Boehler spoke of what the brethren could ask of their wives and what was the sisters’ duty and office with regard to conception, pregnancy, birth, nursing, and rearing the little ones; finally he applied this to the sister who was present with her child and commended her and her child to the Lamb.  In the Gemeinstunde Br. Böhler spoke very significantly about the beautiful watchword: And at this moment many a chosen guild travels joyfully with the cross’s favor among Blacks and Indians, etc.  Today Abraham, Petersen, Bluhm, and Schnall returned in Salomon’s boat.  They were completely tired out.
