in Straussburg; in 1745 united with the Brethren's Church and in
1749 ordained a deacon; in 1754 called to America and in 1755 ordained
a presbyter; pastor for almost 30 years in Nazareth, also for a
short time in Lititz; in 1763 principal of Nazareth Hall; he was
an able and useful servant of the Church; d July 11 1785. He m.
first in 1736, Anna Salome Schwerdt who d in 1745.

SPANGENBERG, Augustus (alias Joseph)
Gottlieb (? second marriage), b July 15,1704 in Klettenberg, Hohenstein,
Saxony, a s. of a Lutheran clergyman; studied Theology at Jena;
in 1733 went to Herrnhut where he became intimately associated with
Count Zinzendorf; came to America four times, and for abut twenty
years was at the head of the Moravian Church in America; returned
to Europe for the last time in July 1762; consecrated a bishop and
was a member of the Unity's Elders' Board; d Sep. 18, 1792 at Berthelsdorf.
He m. Mar. 1740, Eve Mary Immig, mn. Ziegelbauer.

NITSCHMANN, David (second marriage),
b Dec. 27,1696 i n Zauchtenthal, Moravia; by trade a wheelwright
and joiner; in 1725 emigrated to Herrnhut; in 1732, with Leonard
Dober, went to St. Thomas, West Indies, as the first Moravian missionaries
among the heathen; in 1735 he was consecrated the first bishop of
the renewed Moravian Church, and the following year led a Moravian
colony to Georgia; in 1740 came to Pennsylvania; bought the tract
of 500 acres on which Bethlehem was settled, and was the foremost
o f the group who were present at the first Christmas Eve Vigils
in Bethlehem in 1741; d Oct. 8, 1772 and bd in Bethlehem. He m.
first, Nov. 12, 1726, Rosina Schindler, dau. o f Thomas, b in Zauchtenthal
, and an earl y emigrant to Herrnhut; she d .Aug. 10,1753 at Marienborn
and was bd in Herrnhag.

widow of Frederick Martin, a missionary to the Negroes in the West
Indies, where he d. in 1750; she was b in 1722, in Wetteravia, and
d Jan. 20,1810 in Bethlehem.
