Protocol of the College of Overseers - 1795
May 6, 1795 3) The bridge over the Monocacy in the Gemein Garden is so dilapidated that an accident must be feared. Br. Schropp has already spoken with Br. Rubel about it, but it seems there are many difficulties with getting workpeople even for the indispensable repairs; in the meantime; in the meantime, however, as soon as possible a temporary improvement for the security of those who pass over should be put up. July 15, 1795 3) Br. Schropp recalled that the new road over the Lehigh Mountain, which was resolved upon in the College [of Overseers] and for which £30 has already been spent, is not yet finished, because the expected funds from the bordering residents of this street to Germantown have not come in[.] [B]ecause they certainly wanted that this road really be built and used for the Stages, [and as] one has already spent so much, and also given the land for it, the Brethren believe that it would be better to continue it as far out from here as has been promised to the public. July 29, 1795 Present: Schweiniz, Shropp, Andreas, Smith, Heckewelder, Peter, Witke, Merk, Freyhube. 1) The completion of the new road over the Lehigh Mountain will probably cost more than one imagined. Giese requested £100. One would wish however that this man not be employed, much rather John Eshenbach. September 30, 1795 3) Mr. Rickert in Saucona through whose land the new road over the Lehigh will now be laid, has requested compensation from Br. Schropp. It will be submitted to the next November Court, that this road be made public, and a petition should therefore be drafted. November 3, 1795 3) A petition to make the new road over the Lehigh [Mountain] public will be submitted to the court next week. December 2, 1795 Present: Schweiniz, Shropp, Bonn, Reich, Andreas, peter, Witke, Heckewelder, Freyhube, Merk, Hasse. 1) The road over the Lehigh Mountain to the Quakertown Road, which was made public by the last court, was laid out and measured by the jury that was appointed to do so.
